There’s a world of difference between truth and facts. Facts can obscure the truth.’ Maya Angelou, Civil Rights activist, Author of All God’s Children Need Traveling Shoes

Lately, English comedy writer and actor Ricky Gervais has talked a lot about a time in his childhood when he decided that God did not exist.

Gervais describes how he used to love reading about Jesus and would frequently be found looking through his Bible. Until one day, his older brother asked him if he really believed all that stuff. Gervais said he saw his mother give his brother a look, as if to say ‘don’t spoil it for him’. With that look, Gervais stopped reading his Bible and stopped believing in God.

It all made me think of a child who has just found out there is no Father Christmas. No happy, jolly man to leave presents because you had been good anymore… I’ve never really got the Father Christmas idea, I don’t understand the point of telling little kids that he exists, only for them to find out he doesn’t.

I’m not as uncomfortable with the Tooth Fairy, I guess because it’s pretty obvious the Tooth Fairy doesn’t exist. In any case there’s not a whole retail campaign behind the Tooth Fairy. You don’t get Tooth Fairy cards, a Tooth Fairy that you line up for ages to see in a Department store, or a Tooth Fairy collecting money for charity now do you?

In his recent movie ‘The Invention of Lying’, Ricky Gervais plays a man in a world where no one can lie. In this world, Coca Cola is advertised as ‘very sweet’ and Pepsi’s selling point is ‘when they don’t have Coke’. Then one day, Gervais discovers lying. He uses it to get more money out of the bank than he has in his account. He uses it to get dates and to take home the jackpot at a Vegas casino.

The movie trundles on until one day his dying mother asks him if there is a Heaven. So he invents one, because he doesn’t want to upset her. Then he invents God, or ‘The Man in the Sky’, because people want somewhere to go after they die, they want their life to mean something. All a bit cynical.

Do you believe that Christopher Columbus sailed to America, or that Elizabeth I existed? There is much evidence to support the existence of these people. Historical records, the testimony of witnesses who were there, artifacts. As much evidence as there is for the life of Jesus. Do you believe that there is such a thing as wind or electricity? You do because, although you cannot see it, you see the evidence that it is there. Who hasn’t wondered at the wonder of the planet we live in and seen the hand of Someone in it’s beauty?

I like Ricky Gervais, I’ve watched most everything he’s ever done and probably always will. I just think this movie could leave you feeling grey and alone, a bit like the world he portrays in it. A world where there is no God who loves us despite our incredible ability to make bad choices (myself included). Where there is no meaning. No real point to anything. And a death that ends in a void, a big black nothing.

An Olympic runner, a man who dies in a war defending his country, a baby that dies at birth, a grandmother who takes in a child her son did not want, a concert pianist, a priest who spent his life praying for people, a Massai tribeswoman. All of these lives lost for ever. All of their thoughts and dreams, loves and losses confined to thin air. What would be the point? And why if death is all there is at the end, do we find it so hard to deal with death?

If death is just a full stop at the end of a meaningless sentence why does it feel so much like it isn’t?

Like this movie, we can spend a of of time making God into our own image. Perhaps, the best way to find out if He really is there is to ask Him?

He believes in you

A small bunch of vaguely connected photos from around and about Glasgow. At this time of year I’m always on the look-out for new ideas that might be incorporated into Craft & Design or Product Design projects. I’ll taga and name these properly soon when I can find some more time.

Sir Anthony Alfred Caro, OM, CBE, (born 8 March 1924 in New Malden, then in Surrey) is an English abstract sculptor whose work is characterised by assemblies of metal using ‘found’ industrial objects.

Caro’s Dream City (1996), rusting steel, at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Black Cover Flat (1974), steel, at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
Caro was educated at Charterhouse School and Christ’s College, Cambridge, earning a degree in engineering. In 1946, after time in the Royal Navy, he started at the Regent Street Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster) to study sculpture for a year. He transferred to the Royal Academy Schools in 1947, staying until 1952.
Anthony Caro found modernism when working as an assistant to Henry Moore in the 1950s. After being introduced to the American sculptor David Smith in the early 1960s, he abandoned his earlier figurative work and started constructing sculptures by welding or bolting together collections of prefabricated metal, such as I-beams, steel plates and meshes. Often the finished piece is then painted in a bold flat colour.
Caro found international success in the late 1950s and for a time was popular in the US. He was also influential as a tutor at St Martins School of Art, now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London inspiring a younger generation of abstract British Sculptors led by his one time assistant Phillip King as well as reaction group including Bruce McLean, Barry Flanagan, Richard Long and Gilbert and George. He and several former students were asked to join the seminal 1966 show at the Jewish Museum in New York entitled, "Primary Structures" representing the British influence on the "New Art".
Caro taught at Bennington College from 1963 to 1965, along with painter Jules Olitski and sculptor David Smith.
He is often credited with the significant innovation of removing the sculpture from its plinth, although Smith and Brancusi had both previously taken steps in the same direction. Caro’s sculptures are usually self supporting and sit directly on the floor. In doing so they remove a barrier between the work and the viewer, who is invited to approach and interact with the sculpture from all sides.
In the 1980s, Caro’s work changed direction by introducing more literal elements with a series of figures drawn from classical Greece. Latterly he has also attempted large scale installation pieces. One of these large pieces, Sea Music, stands on the quay at Poole in Dorset. To mark his 80th birthday, a retrospective exhibition was organized by the Tate Gallery in 2005. He was knighted in 1987 and received the Order of Merit in May 2000.
In 2008, he did the "Chapel of Light" installation in the Saint Jean-Baptiste Church of Bourbourg (France).

Denver, CO (PRWEB) April 19, 2013

Launching in time for Earth Day 2013, GREEN CYCLER joins the worldwide call to action on the problem of food waste. Invented to improve food scrap recovery while significantly improving home composting results, GREEN CYCLER’s are now available to consumers nationwide.

GREEN CYCLER is the first-ever food scrap shredder and recycling system–a new class of kitchen appliance that brings long-needed innovation to organic waste recovery. GREEN CYCLER is designed to match upscale kitchen aesthetics while solving problems that have prevented widespread adoption of food scrap recycling. By shredding organic material to the ideal size for composting, GREEN CYCLER makes food scrap rescue easy while speeding composting by 10 times or more.

According to the U.S. EPA, composting is one of the most vital strategies for curbing greenhouse gas emissions. With an estimated 97 percent of organic waste being sent to landfills, changing waste disposal habits can simply but significantly impact the worldwide landfill, water-quality and climate change crisis.

According to GREEN CYCLER inventor Gail Loos, “Food scrap recycling is the next critical step toward improving the nation’s recycling rate. While most people are now geared toward recycling plastic, glass and paper, most households could take a significant earth-friendly step forward by preventing wasted food and recycling their inedible scraps, rinds and peels. Food scraps are a valuable resource and most can be composted or repurposed directly into valuable soil amendments. If we all stopped wasting food, it would have an impact on greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking one in four cars off the road.”

“The Face of Climate Change” is the focal point of Earth Day 2013. Food waste, from production through disposal, is a significant source of water and fossil fuels consumption. Methane and CO2 emissions from food decomposing in landfills are a significant contributor to global climate change.

“Our goal is to provide an appliance that will change how consumers manage food scraps and turn them into recyclable assets instead of trash,” said Loos. “GREEN CYCLER hopes to help people meet their waste-reduction pledges on Earth Day 2013 and beyond.”
