Question by dowagiac.michigan: own the company i work for has given me a contract, that states, they own all of my inventions and or ideas?
i have been trying to avoid signing it , now they told me this time i have to turn it in with my insuance papers, if i sing it they own all of my ideas,inventions,seem like me too! they put it all together with their confidential information and proprietary right agreement contract, so the way i guess i see it , if I invent anything they own it? hell no!! i not going to turn it in again, and see what they do,hope they miss it, if not i have to quit i guess, i need a job, but i also need to know if i get some off the wall idea, i own it. what do you think about it. how can they do that, and can they fire me?

My father-in-law invented many drugs that are sold over the counter in the cough and cold aisle. He of course would not have gotten the job without signing a contract like that too.
He makes no money off the products he invented. He received a salary to invent them for those companies.
You will not get the job without the contract most likely.

this is common in business.. they pay you and want you working for them .. not yourself. if you work for someone and take their money ..do the right thing.or quit.and yes they can fire you if you don’t want to work under the condtions they lay out. , also if you don’t live up to your word(the contract they can sue you)
It’s a pretty standard contract. Lots of companies do that.
They can tell you that unless you sign that contract they can’t employ you.
Ask them to clarify the statements in writing for you. They should be indicating any Ideas or Inventions related to your career.
If they are outside of your current business, then they should not own rights to them (assuming you’re not working on them during company time)
If they are idea or inventions related to your career, then they SHOULD have that right. You would not have nearly as much capacity for ideas and inventions without the benefit of their environent.
And yes, if you don’t accept the term of employment, they can release you from the job. (Fire you)
You didn’t mention what kind of company it is. Anything done on company time technically belongs to the company. If you have an idea, keep it to yourself until you get home and then improve upon it. If they insist you submit ideas, just tell them you have none at the moment. A flash of brilliance to you could mean mega bucks for them if you let them know about it.
My father invented the folding stretcher they use in ambulances, befor that they had to lift patients manually. He designed it in his working hours so received no payments & could not register it as his own.
I believe that if you can prove that you designed/invented something outside working hours it will belong to you perhaps you can have this written in somewhere.
This is a standard contract that I have signed myself! Wait till you have a good idea, leave your job and there you are!
